Trends of Mojo profits made in Hong Kong and Singapore between 1994 - 2001
Mojo in Hong Kong
According to Figure 1, the profits made by Mojo in Hong Kong rose gradually from 30m in 1994 to 60m in 1997. The reason behind this was due to the pre handover boom in Hong Kong. However, this was followed by a post handover depression so a sudden decline occurred and the profits made in 1999 fell to their lowest point of just 20m. The growth of the China market in 1999 enabled Mojo to export their garment to Mainland China, so the profits then grew steadily towards 2001 to about 40m.
Mojo in Singapore
In contrast, the profits made by Mojo in Singapore climbed slightly to 1996 before they levelled off at about 50m until 1996. The explanation for this is because the Singaporean taxation policy was favourable to the businesses locally. However, the stiff competition from malaysia in mid 1990s damaged Singapore significantly so the company faced a steady decline until 2001.
Satisfaction with Working Conditions among Senior and Junior Staff
Recently, a finding of a survey has been conducted by an insurance company about working conditions at its head office in Central. It is found that most of the staff members are satisfied with the decoration, lighting, thermal comfort and air quality of the company on average. However, there is nearly half of the senior staff members and junior staff members who are dissatisfied with the pantry. In addition, there are only about a quarter of junior staff members are satisfied with the office equipment and under half of them are satisfied with the office furniture.
Office Furniture
About three-quarters of senior staff are satisfied with the office furniture but just only under a half of junior staff are satisfied with it. The reason behind this is possibly due to the furniture used by senior staff is newer and more comfortable than the one used by junior staff. This may discourage the junior staff and lead to disunity in the company.
Equipment
Over 70% of senior staff are satisfied with the office equipment but only about a quarter of junior staff are satisfied with the aspect. It is probably because most of the daily-used office equipment, like the photocopying machines and the scanners, is handled by the junior staff. Moreover, the majority of the machines are old and need maintenance, on the other hand, the senior staff have their private advanced equipment provided by the company. This may lead to inefficiency in junior staff's work in long-term and is a very serious issue.
Pantry
As for the pantry, around half of the senior staff and the junior staff are satisfied. The reason for this is its limited space and unclean environment. The staff may feel uncomfortable in their place of relaxation so this will likely upset the team spirit in the company in the long run.
Recommendations
To cope with these issues, several suggestion are recommended. Firstly, the company should renew the old furniture used by the junior staff. The maintenance should be worked out regularly to ensure the office furniture is always in the sound condition. Also, the same practice should be adopted on the office equipment as well. The old and broken machines have to be replaced or repaired hence the overall operating efficiency will improve. Last but not least, the pantry should be expanded and cleaned more frequently. The pantry is a place for relaxation so it should be comfortable. The company should pay attention to the sanitation and aim at creating a better resting environment to the employees. The staff is the greatest asset of the company so their opinions are indeed valuable.
